A new legend is rising above the skyline at Six Flags Great Adventure.
In 2027, guests will have the chance to experience Bakunawa, a groundbreaking new roller coaster that combines world-record-breaking thrills with a story rooted in Filipino mythology. As the future centerpiece of the park's transformed Boardwalk area, Bakunawa is set to become one of the most ambitious attractions ever built, while introducing millions of guests to a legendary figure from Philippine folklore.
A Legendary Myth Brought to Life
Bakunawa is inspired by the mythical sea serpent of Philippine folklore, a powerful creature often associated with eclipses and celestial legends. For generations, stories of Bakunawa have been shared through oral traditions, literature, art, music, and cultural storytelling throughout the Philippines.
Now, that mythology is finding a new home in one of the nation's premier theme park destinations.
Through a partnership with global creative organization +6THR3E:, Six Flags Great Adventure is helping bring Filipino culture and storytelling to a mainstream audience in a completely new way. The collaboration represents an exciting step forward in increasing cultural visibility while celebrating the rich traditions and creativity of the Filipino community.
As Lyle del Mundo, founder of +6THR3E:, noted, representation can exist across many forms of entertainment. With Bakunawa, Filipino mythology is moving beyond books, films, and art galleries and into a world-class theme park experience where guests can engage with the story through action, adventure, and imagination.
The World's Tallest and Fastest Spinning Coaster
While Bakunawa carries a powerful cultural story, it is also poised to redefine what guests expect from a roller coaster experience.
Standing an incredible 382 feet tall and reaching speeds of 100 miles per hour, Bakunawa will be the tallest and fastest spinning coaster ever built. The attraction will feature free-spinning, floorless trains that rotate naturally throughout the ride, ensuring that no two experiences are exactly the same.
The coaster's journey will last approximately 2 minutes and 17 seconds and feature three powerful launches powered by linear synchronous motors.
Riders will:
- Launch from 0 to 60 mph
- Accelerate from 60 to 80 mph while upside down
- Blast to a top speed of 100 mph during the final launch
- Climb 382 feet into the sky
- Spiral through a dramatic 180-degree bank before plunging back toward the ground
With a track length of more than 3,100 feet and constantly rotating trains, Bakunawa promises a uniquely unpredictable ride experience every time guests board.
Six World Records in One Attraction
When it opens in 2027, Bakunawa is expected to debut with six world records:
- World's Fastest Spinning Coaster (100 mph)
- World's Tallest Spinning Coaster (382 feet)
- World's Fastest Inversion (80 mph)
- World's Longest Stall Inversion
- World's First Floorless Spinning Coaster
- World's First Upside-Down Launch
These achievements will cement Bakunawa's place among the most innovative roller coasters ever created and make it one of the most anticipated attractions in the world.
More Than a Roller Coaster
For Six Flags Great Adventure, Bakunawa represents more than record-breaking statistics.
The attraction demonstrates how themed entertainment can introduce guests to stories and cultures they may not have encountered before. By drawing inspiration from Philippine mythology, the coaster creates an opportunity for guests of all backgrounds to discover a legendary figure while enjoying a one-of-a-kind experience.
"One of the things that makes great storytelling so powerful is its ability to connect people across cultures and generations," said Ryan Eldredge, Director of Sales & Marketing at Six Flags Great Adventure. Through Bakunawa, that connection comes to life in a bold and unforgettable way.
The Future of the Boardwalk Begins
As Six Flags Great Adventure continues transforming The Boardwalk, Bakunawa will serve as its signature attraction and a defining addition to the park's already impressive coaster collection.
By combining cutting-edge engineering, immersive storytelling, and cultural inspiration, Bakunawa represents the next evolution of theme park attractions. It is a ride that celebrates both innovation and heritage, delivering an experience unlike anything guests have seen before.
When Bakunawa opens in 2027, riders will not simply be boarding another roller coaster. They will be stepping into a legend.
And that legend is about to make history.
