Penguin Passage
OUR BIRDS HAVE TEMPORARILY MIGRATED OFF HABITAT
Pong the penguin is joined by a colony of these engaging flightless birds at Penguin Passage. Contrary to common belief, only a few of the 17 penguin species come from cold climates, such as Antarctica. The African penguin you find here at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is native to the southern coast of Africa and well-suited to our local climate.
Though penguins are unable to fly in the air, they have strong wings and streamlined bodies which allow them to “fly” through the water. They can swim up to 20 miles per hour. At Penguin Passage, you can watch them waddle on land, dive into the water, or see them glide through the water from an underwater viewing window.
Fun Fact: Not all penguins look alike! The black stripe and black spot patterns on the chest are unique for every penguin, similar to human fingerprints. Their tuxedo black and white coloring is called countershading and it provides camouflage from above and below when they are in the water.
