Visiting Carowinds With a Toddler: A Parent’s Guide

Your definitive guide to visiting Carowinds with a toddler or small child. Tips and resources to ensure your visit is as fun and stress-free as possible for both parents and kids.

Visiting Carowinds with toddler

Visiting Carowinds with a toddler may seem overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be. As a new father and seasoned Carowinds employee, I’ve started bringing my 2½-year-old son to the park and have learned a lot along the way. A few mistakes—and plenty of core memories—helped shape this guide to ensure your visit is as fun and stress-free as possible for both parents and kids.

1) Free Pre-K Pass

Carowinds offers a free Pre-K Pass for children ages 3–5, which includes unlimited visits all season. It also covers Carolina Harbor Waterpark and seasonal events like The Great Pumpkin Fest and WinterFest—making it one of the best values available.

To redeem the pass:

  • Register online early in the season. The 2026 registration deadline is May 31.
  • An active Silver, Gold or Platinum Season Pass is required.
  • After registering, activate the pass at Guest Services outside the main entrance.
  • Bring your child and proof of age (birth certificate or passport; copies accepted).
  • Activation must also be completed by May 31.

Children aged 2 and younger receive free admission. Children 3 and older need a ticket or Pre-K Pass.

Pro tip: Register and activate your child’s Pre-K Pass as early as possible.

2) Planning Your Visit

There’s no bad time to visit Carowinds, but for your first trip with a toddler, aim for lighter crowds and shorter waits. Weekdays, especially with overcast weather, are ideal.

  • Gates typically open at 10 a.m.; arrive around 9:30 a.m. to get through security
  • Take advantage of cooler temperatures and shorter lines early in the day
  • A Friday afternoon visit after nap time also works well

A good rule of thumb: plan to stay about one hour per year of age. We typically stay three to four hours. With a Pre-K Pass, you have the flexibility to come and go as needed.

Pro tip: Weekday mornings offer the best mix of cooler temps and shorter lines, including at Carolina Harbor.

3) Strollers & What to Pack

Bring a stroller - it’s essential. Stroller parking is available near most kids’ rides, and midways are easy to navigate.

Pack a diaper bag with essentials:

  • Wipes and a change of clothes
  • Sunscreen
  • Swim diapers, water shoes and towels (for the waterpark)
  • Empty sippy cups or refillable water bottles

Life jackets are available at the park, but you are free to bring one from home.

Pro tip: Pack smart, but travel light.

4) Height Requirements

Most of Carowinds kiddie rides have height requirements between 36–42 inches. You can find ride requirements and eligible attractions on the Carowinds mobile app, website or on signage outside each ride.

Guest Services also offers free rider-height wristbands, helping you quickly identify which rides your child can enjoy. Swing by as you enter the park.

Pro tip: Check height requirements ahead of time to plan your route.

5) Introducing Your Toddler to Rides

Start slow and build confidence. Carowinds’ family rides are designed with their enjoyment and safety in mind, but easing into the experience helps avoid overwhelming our tiny humans and triggering their giant emotions.

  • Encourage, but don’t push
  • Position smaller riders on the inside
  • Show them how to hold on and offer reassurance

Ride operators are a great resource—don’t hesitate to ask questions.

You can ride along on most attractions. If not, you’re welcome to assist with loading and unloading, which may be a good idea depending on their mobility and grace.

Pro tip: The Grand Carousel is a perfect first ride, and my toddler’s favorite.

6) Baby Care Center

Located in Camp Snoopy, the Baby Care Center is a comfortable, air-conditioned space for families. It offers:

  • Private nursing areas
  • Changing stations
  • Bottle warmers and refrigerators
  • Family restrooms

Pro tip: If your toddler is potty training, consider using a pull-up—just in case.

7) Camp Snoopy Highlights

Camp Snoopy is one of the best kids’ areas in any amusement park. In 2015, the area was expanded, adding numerous guest enhancements and two major attractions – Snoopy’s Racing Railway and Charlie Brown’s River Raft Blast. With 13 rides, added shade and character meet-and-greets, you’ll be happy to send your kid off to camp.

For little thrill-seekers:

  • Wilderness Run: 36-inch requirement
  • Snoopy’s Racing Railway: 36 inches with an adult
  • Woodstock Express: 40 inches with an adult

Download the mobile app for ride wait times and show schedules.

Pro tip: Don’t miss Beagle Scout Acres, an 8,000-square-foot shaded play area—perfect playground for toddlers and plenty of shade for parents.

8) Carolina Harbor Waterpark

Looking to cool off? Carolina Harbor offers toddler-friendly areas like Kitty Hawk Cove and Myrtle Turtle Beach, featuring splash pads and interactive play.

Cabanas are available nearby and provide a convenient “home base,” with amenities like mini-fridges, fans, TVs and lounge seating.

Life jackets are complimentary, and attendants can help with proper sizing. Always keep toddlers within arm’s reach, even in shallow water.

Pro tip: Reapply sunscreen often, secure swim diapers and keep everyone hydrated.
