Oktoberfest Facts

Not too familiar with Oktoberfest? No need to worry, we’ve got you covered! Below is a list of fun facts about the Oktoberfest event that takes place in Germany every year that inspired the Oktoberfest Food Festival at Six Flags St. Louis.

Oktoberfest is an annual festival held in Munich, Germany over a two-week period at the end of September. Yep, although the festival is named “Oktoberfest,” it actually takes place in September and ends the first Sunday of October!

Each year, the festival is kicked off by the mayor of Munich tapping the first keg and then shouting “O’ zapft is!”. This phrase means “It’s Tapped,” and those attending the event are not allowed to begin their celebration until this takes place!

The festival is a 214-year-old tradition that was not originally a beer festival. The very first Oktoberfest that took place was to honor the marriage of Prince Ludwig and Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in 1810!
