Come join us at Hurricane Harbor Rockford for our second Cardboard Boat Regatta! Get ready to create your cardboard boat and set sail in Tsunami Bay at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Rockford!

Important Details

Who Can Participate?

 
  • Each team should be made up of 2 – 4 participants.
  • Team members under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.  The adult does not have to be on the race team but must have a valid form of admission. All registered team members must be inside the boat while racing.  Teams may only complete with (1) one boat.
  • All persons on board must be wearing a Personal Flotation Device (PFD).
    • PFDs are available in the waterpark or participants may bring their own
      Coast Guard Approved PFD.
  • Participants will provide their own paddles.
  • All entrants must ensure that their portion of the pit area has been cleaned prior to departure on Regatta day.
  • All boats must be removed from the park or cut apart and placed in cardboard recycling containers after the race.

Day of Details

 
  • Participants and spectators will be admitted with a valid one-day ticket admission, Pass, or Membership. Participants will then proceed to the check-in table.
  • Check-in will include signing a race waiver and photo release.
  • All team members must check-in by 9:15 am or forfeit their place in the race.

Building Rules

 
  • Only corrugated cardboard can be used to construct the boat. It can be of any thickness. Non-corrugated material is not permitted. Additionally, the cardboard cannot be coated. Options such as coated wax-type cardboard are not permitted.
  • No solid cardboard or roll tubes may be used to strengthen the boat structure. Wood, metal, or any other materials that would aid in flotation or make the boat more rigid are prohibited. No use of Styrofoam is permitted.
  • Joints and seams may be glued and/or taped. Duct tape, contact cement, rubber cement, wood glue, or construction adhesive may be used. No nails, metal or wood fasteners, staples, caulk, silicone, or hot glue may be used in the construction of the boat.
  • Teams may paint with any “one-part” paint to decorate their boat, and decorating is encouraged! In addition to one-part paint, boats may only use duct tape to wrap or cover their boat. No other forms of plastics or wrappings may be used.
  • Boats must be 100% constructed prior to race day. Only minor patches/adjustments may be made prior to/in between heats.
  • Decorations may be made from any material, but may not be used to reinforce the actual structure of the boat.
  • The design is up to you! Let your imagination run wild! We encourage DC Superhero boats to make an appearance!

Boats will be inspected upon arrival by the official judges. If any rules are found to be broken, you may be disqualified.

Races

Race Details

 

Preliminary Heats:

  • The waves in Tsunami Bay will be OFF during the preliminaries.
  • All team members must be inside the boat for the race.
  • Boats will race in groups of six (6).
  • Boats must race to the end of the wave pool, touch the side, turn around, and race back to the starting line.
  • Boats will be timed, and their time will be recorded.
  • After preliminary heats are completed, boats with the six fastest times overall will advance to the finals.
  • In the instance that all boats sink during the preliminaries, the boat that is afloat the longest will be deemed the Grand Prize Winner.

Final Heat:

  • The waves in Tsunami Bay will be ON during the finals.
  • All team members must be inside the boat for the race.
  • Boats must race to the end of the wave pool, touch the side, turn around, and race back to the starting line.
  • The first boat to finish is the Grand Prize Winner!
  • In the instance that all boats sink during the finals, the boat that is afloat the longest will be deemed the Grand Prize Winner.
