Six Flags Offers Free Tickets to Students to Promote Literacy

2012 ‘Read to Succeed’ Registration Now Open for K-6 Teachers and Students

Eureka, MO--January 5, 2012--Six Flags St. Louis and Discovery Education have partnered to offer free admission to the theme park for students in grades K-6 who participate in Read to Succeed, a free online program designed to encourage students to read outside of the classroom.

Students who complete six hours of non-school-related reading, such as picture books, newspapers, comic books, novels and nonfiction materials, are eligible to earn a free admission ticket.  Teachers with 10 or more students who complete the program are also eligible for a free ticket. Online registration for schools is now open through March 1 at http://discoveryeducation.com/readtosucceed.

Teachers are encouraged to register as soon as possible to provide students with enough time to complete the required six hours of reading by March 1.  To help teachers better understand the new features and updates to the Read to Succeed program, including how to register and submit student reading hours, a free webinar is available January 10 at http://readtosucceed.discoveryeducation.com.  Archived information is also available at any time.

“Last year over 126,000 students representing 2,252 schools in a 250-mile radius of the park participated in this reading program and we would like to see that number grow in 2012,” said Park President Dave Roemer.  “We believe that instilling a passion for reading among today’s young students is the first step in the fight against illiteracy.”

Discovery Education packs the Read to Succeed website full of classroom and at-home resources which focus on extending that passion beyond the classroom. Suggested reading lists combined with puzzles, lesson plans and multimedia resources help increase student engagement as the books' themes and concepts spring to life. At home, parents can extend learning with activities that incorporate and build upon classroom reading themes. More information on the Read to Succeed program can be found online.
