California's Cheerleading Championships - Feb. 23 & 24
Six Flags Magic Mountain will be filled with teen spirit, choreographed jumps and pyramids Saturday, February 23 and Sunday, February 24 as over 1,000 SCREAMin' cheerleaders compete in their bout to take home top honors at Six Flags 29th Annual High School Cheerleading Championships.
Six Flags Magic Mountain literally gives cheerleaders all over Southern California something to SCREAM about, and this time we're not talking coasters! The high school cheerleading squads take to the stage cheering, dancing, flipping, stunting and getting the crowd to their feet, while they compete to become the cream of the Southern California cheer crop. To date, over 50,000 athletes have competed in this highly competitive contest.
Over 3,000 high school varsity and junior varsity squads have entered the competition this year.
The competing squads are evaluated by cheerleading instructors and judges who rate the performances based on coordination, creativity, execution and routine originality. All squads, regardless of age or skill level, will have 2.5 minutes to showcase their choreographed routine.
Six Flags will award a total of $5,000 in cash prizes this year and has awarded more than $135,000 in cash donations to the winning squads over the years. The top squad will take home $1,000 and other Six Flags prizes!
Cheer squads from El Sereno Middle School, Rosedale Middle School, Calvary Chapel of Moreno Valley, Porterville High School, Sultana High School, Hart High School, Hesperia High School and Westlake High School are the defending title holders.
PurimFest - "World's Largest Purim Carnival" - March 2
Six Flags Magic Mountain celebrates the most festive of Jewish holidays along with Temple Beth Ami and Jewish Life on Sunday, March 2, 2008 when the Park hosts the fifth annual PurimFest.
PurimFest, "The World's Largest Purim Carnival," is a unique opportunity to expand connections to the Jewish community as they celebrate the holiday of Purim with unbridled joy and enthusiasm. It will also bring the Purim spirit and excitement of the holiday to thousands of unaffiliated families in the Park, who are looking to emphasize family values.
The Festival of Purim commemorates a major victory over oppression and is celebrated with prizes, noisemakers, costumes and treats. Purim is celebrated throughout the world with carnivals, entertainment, face painters, costumes, masks and special food.
Kosher food vendors will provide food especially for the day. Arts and crafts for children, face painters and youth choirs will round out the festivities. Park hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on March 2 and all activities are free with paid park admission.
Physics Day - March 9
Thousands of high school students will gravitate to Six Flags Magic Mountain on Sunday, March 9, to experience and learn as the concepts from physics come alive in the form of roller coasters at the 27th annual Physics Day. More than 3,000 physics students will engage in physics problems and competitions while riding and observing world class roller coasters.
The day-long event is designed to demonstrate the principles of acceleration, energy conversion and many other physics concepts through questions relating to the speed, distance, time and energy involved in the mechanics of roller coasters. Students are provided with a workbook that directs them to solve physics problems about roller coasters and attractions around the Park.
Highlighting the event is the Physics Olympics, a competition that allows students to put their science skills to the test by participating in activities such as the challenging constant acceleration walk and projectile motion toss. The winning students receive awards given at the end of the Olympic events. The Physics Olympics will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the Park.
