Great Adventure & Wild Safari

Physics, Math & Science Days

An Academic Adventure!  Experience how thrilling physics, math and science can be at Six Flags Great Adventure's hands-on, outdoor classroom. Tickets are more than 50% off the main gate regular admission price, include free Wild Safari admission and the below special presentations. A special buffet lunch is also available in the Catering Picnic Grove.   Download an order form HERE!

Physics Students Will:

  • Use tools to collect physical data for analysis and predict and calculate forces acting on a rider at different points during a ride
  • Calculate the work and power necessary to move riders through a ride
  • Calculate centripetal acceleration and normal forces acting on riders in circular motion
  • Use the conservation of energy to approximate velocities and altitudes of riders at different points in the ride
  • Use rotational motion equations to determine linear speed of riders in circular motion
  • A special Math and Science workbook is also available for middle school students

SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS:

Meet Our Engineer - 11 a.m. to Noon at Showcase Theater
(Presentation offered on Exclusive Education Day only -  April 27)
Learn the science behind the design of modern roller coasters! Six Flags Chief Corporate Engineer, Larry Chickola, P.E. hosts a special presentation on all aspects of roller coaster design including topics from basic physics to restraints and vehicles.  An exciting discussion regarding engineering careers will follow the presentation. Space is limited - Reserve your seats today by emailing NJSpecialEvents@sixflags.com.

  Physics Teacher Workshop - April 21, 2012 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Join Physics Workbook author, Tom Paterson in a workshop that will go through the workbook in detail.  Participants will receive soultion keys and supplimental material for planning your trip with your students.  An in-class review will be followed by an opportunity to practice data collection techniques in the park.  This is one workshop your family and friends will want to join you with special discounts on admission.

Speed or Velocity - How fast do these rides move? 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
(Presentation offered on select Physics, Math & Science Days)
Which ride goes faster, the Fantasy Fling, Big Wheel, Buccaneer or Blackbeard’s Lost Treasure Train?  Stop at the blue tent directly across from Buccaneer to explore the velocity of several rides that can be seen easily from that location.  Stopwatches, data sheets, pencils and clipboards will be provided so students can quickly time rides and get all the data needed.  Once students are back in the classroom they can determine the linear and angular velocities of the rides.  Then they will know for sure which one is the fastest! Presented by Robert Jesberg, a vetern science teacher, K'NEX Education consultant and instuctor/site director for the National Science Foundation.

Note to the Teachers:
Whether or not your students complete the Six Flags Great Adventure Physics Workbook, Math and Science Workbook, or they are completing activities of your own design you will want to make this an activity for your students while they are at the park.  This is a stand-alone series of activities so that students can gather their data in about 10 to 15 minutes.  Linear and angular velocity will be determined by students through data that is collected at the site of four rides in the park.  Students will gather data relative to the length of a roller coaster’s track and then they will time the ride as it makes a complete circuit along the track.  Students will also gather data relative to the radius of rotational rides and time the rides as they complete multiple rotations.  When students return to their classrooms, they can complete calculations of the average linear velocity of the coaster and the angular velocity of the rotational rides.  It is also suggested that students compute the linear velocity of riders on the rotational ride to compare with the coaster information.
